andBEYOND’S CONSERVATION COUPS
A pioneer of conservation tourism in Africa, this year andBeyond (previously known as CC Africa) celebrates its 20th anniversary as a responsible sustainable safari lodge operator. The first lodge, andBeyond Phinda Mountain, opened in South Africa in October 1991.
Recent conservation triumphs include:
• A 45 percent increase in leopard on andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, South Africa, resulting from the most extensive leopard research ever conducted worldwide on Phinda in conjunction with Panthera, a USA organisation focused on conserving the 36 species of wild cat. The programme has led to legislated changes in geographic hunting regions and practices, and measures to prevent the predation of leopard by farmers.
• The mass relocation of 19 gaur (Indian bison) from Kanha National Park to Bandhavgarh National Park in India where they had become extinct. The project has benefited active wildlife management in general in India and laid the foundation for the relocation of cheetah, currently extinct in India, from South Africa, and the relocation of Barasinga (hard ground swamp deer) of which there are only 400 left in the wilds.
• andBeyond Mnemba Island is one of only two protected nesting sites in Zanzibar for the endangered green turtle. So far this year more than 40 nests have been recorded. Since 1996 the Lodge has been responsible for an average of 34 turtle nest layings with an average of 70 hatchlings per nest every year.
